Malachi spoke the Lord's word about one hundred years after God's people returned from exile.
The temple had been rebuilt and the walls of Jerusalem restored. The people had looked in earnest for the coming of the Messiah who would reign over a unified Israel, rule the nations, and bring justice and peace for all.
But decades had passed without any promise coming to pass. And so, the people stopped thinking about how the arrival of God’s promise should change their life. Corruption, injustice, and faithlessness once again marked the land. And so, another prophet was needed. Malachi. He who would give a last call to the people before silence descending on the land for four hundred years.
